I've used the following pattern ( which Brian also said was period correct) , once, so far - I found that for my own "larger" frame, that I need to ( for the next one I make) make the arm-holes a wee bit roomier, for comfort. This pattern also has the advantage of being long enough to reach to mid-thigh, for wearing with a kilt ( or 'Belted- Plaid').

Quite often it was. It was a style with some gents to have the hem of the waistcoat peak out below the coat, especially if the waistcoat had fancy trim.
