Not sure of the tartan or weight of the wool, but for $50 USD...

So just out of curiosity, has anyone else made any purchases like this? It's just looking like there are some awesome deals on ex-hires and lightly-loved kilts.

seeing it listed as "size 30" with no specific measurement for waist, hip or length makes me wonder just how "vintage" it is...

That's the Cockburn tartan, and appears to be a pretty light weight cloth. It doesn't have any lining, and as the pleats are not cut out, I would suspect this would be a fairly low yardage kilt. I can't tell from the photos, but I would guess this was machine sewn as well.

I agree with New Englander -- it may be "pre-owned" but I wouldn't describe it as "vintage." The style of kilt pin is definitely modern.

O'Neill (the maker on the tag of that kilt) uses 10 - 11 oz wool cloth that is woven in Italy.

"Vintage" is a relative term. Chucks from the 1980's are "vintage". I even heard Nirvana on a classic rock station yesterday.

I have acquired a few gems from eBay, as have other forum members. It's wise to ask as many questions as possible, especially when the seller doesn't list very much information.

Recently, I won an auction on eBay that no-one else bided on... the kilt was part of an outfit, it didn't say kilt in the auction title, and it was labeled as the wrong tartan! I'm hoping to keep the kilt and sell off some of the other parts of the outfit (tweed Argyle jacket, glengarry hat), so that the transaction will pay for itself. One needs to be canny when kilting on a student budget

Bottom line: eBay can be a good source for quality items at a decent price if you are careful and patient with your purchases.

And as Mr. Newsome pointed out, it is a light (10 oz.) wool and is low yardage. It fits like anything "off the rack", which is good enough for $50, IMHO.

The pleats are many, yet somewhat shallow, and the buckles are all but brand new, so leading me to believe that "vintage" it is not.

It is however comfortable, and I think it looks quite alright when wearing. It won't be fit for formal dining or the such, but for running errands, lounging about the house, etc., it will be just fine. Thanks for ID'ing the tartan for me, Matt!

As for lacking the lining, I think my sewing skills have developed enough to put one in (as well as cutting out the top pleating sections).

All in all, I think it was a pretty decent buy.

Really?! Wow... In the age of the internet, I guess if it's over 5 minutes old, it's considered "vintage".

Ebay is wonderful for what my boyfriend calls "Stunt kilts"
He wears them while setting up before events, camping.
But be warned, they are the gateway drug to the real thing....ha ha
ENJOY your new kilt, it looks great! We want pictures!
