I was trying to purchase this book on Amazon (I realize now you have a dedicated site). Oddly, Amazon has errantly (I believe) added $100. to the price for used and new. I don't know if this matters or not, but I would think a lot more books may be sold if they didn't cost $144.00. I like Amazon because they've done me right in the past. But their price for this book turned me off.

FYI All the copies on Amazon are offered by independent book sellers (i.e. used book stores), not Amazon. They are free to set their own prices. Whether or not those prices reflect reality. . .

I do not sell to Amazon, so I have absolutely nothing to do with the price listed on Amazon. I sell via my web site and through a few retailers and catalogs here in the States (e.g., Highland Xpress, Scottish Tartans Museum, Celtic Croft) and in Canada (e.g., Freedom Kilts, Tartantown), and through a couple places in Scotland (e.g., STA). Their prices are consistent with what I charge on my web site, not with what the independent seller on Amazon charges.

So, it's not clear whether you were turned off to Amazon or turned off to The Art of Kiltmaking by the price listed by an independent seller on Amazon, but I hope that clarifying the situation will put both Amazon and me back in your good graces.

With all of the requests that ask for additional clarification of the processes, I would think a private section of the web site requiring a login based on proof of purchase of the book might be useful. That would allow folks who have the book and are interested to see more or learn more to have access to more material via the web site. This should also provide additional incentive to purchase the book.

I respectfully disagree. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has acquired The Book through trade, gift, or other means. Also, my guess is that many who already have the book no longer have a receipt.

And taking pictures of ourselves with the book and emailing them to Barb would surely bog down the system

I also do not think an 'Owners Only' section is necessary. Really, there are so many fine points to discuss that the book or an equally concise understanding seems necessary just to enter the conversation.

I definitely would *not* want an "owner's only" section. I wrote the book to help people learn how to make kilts, but I am more than happy to answer questions for anyone who is trying to make a kilt or help people with problems or post examples (although I am obviously interested in having people buy the book!).

What I'm not happy about is when people photocopy the book and pass it around, when they scan illustrations and post them on the web (someone did this last year on eHow and tried to pass it off as his own), and when well-meaning people on this forum do what amounts to blow-by-blow photo instructions of kiltmaking with a kilt they are making using the instructions in my book. I'm delighted to have people post "in progress" photos, but I do object to postings that amount to a kilt tutorial. Let me emphasize that no one on XMarks has ever done this in bad faith - it's always been a result of justifiable pride and genuine enthusiasm. But I have asked people in the past to aim for something less than a full-blown tutorial when they have seemed to be headed down that road.
