If you don't know his specific foot an leg measurements then the safest thing to do is go with a stock size, rather than a custom knit. You'd still need to have an idea of his shoe size, but that ought to be easier to find out without ruining the surprise.
I know we have some red/black and red/white in stock now, but I'd have to check to see if we have the size you need.
