    Diced kilt hose question

I'm looking to buy diced kilt hose as a gift to my father. He has his 50th med school reunion (Glasgow University) next September. My question is two fold.
    1) Has anyone bought the diced hose from J Higgins? The price looks to good to be true, how is the quality, will they last? (is their a better vendor for these diced kilt hose)
    2) He wears the modern MacDonald tartan which colour combination for him red/black, red/white or red/green?
I'm doing this to save him from showing up in white kilt!!!!
Thanking everone in advance for their input

    haven't bought...

I haven't bought diced hose anywhere, but I vote for red/black. Do check out the ones at the STM giftshop. The custom ones are cheaper than the in stock, if you have the time. A little more money now, a lot more wear later?

    Fancy hose

In addition to STM, you could check with Dunadd Trading Co. (sponsor linked at the bottom of this page). They have a nice selection, good quality, and Chris is a pleasure to deal with. Their prices also include shipping!

    Happy shopping,

The reason for the price of machine knit hose is that they're produced in generic sizes and from a higher percentage of synthetic material than most custom-knit hose. If your father is of pretty average size, then the machine-knit hose just might do the trick. If he's not or if he's a stickler for tradition and/or quality, then you're better off going for custom hose.

With the custom hose, how would you go about getting the measurements without letting the cat out of the bag? That would be tricky.

My vote is for the red/black. Second choice is red/green.

    J. Higgins has great value for the money. Go for it!

I ordered a pair of Argyll hose from Higgins; even after following the "care & feeding instructions", they still grew beards. The same thing happened to two other friends of mine.

Hmm, I never had that experience with their diced hose, but I haven't worn them but two times. Yikes, is that what I'm to look forward to!???

I wore mine to 3-4 formal occasions before I noticed the beards and a wee hole. Hopefully Higgins has corrected the issue since then, but I'd go with the STM, Josh or Dunadd Trading Co. first. It's worth the extra bit of bob for the peace of mind.

Todd, yes, on second thought, I'd go with Chris at Dunadd. I do have several pairs of his Argyll toped hose and I love'm. And, Chris is super to deal with.
