I guess it depends largely on what you think a shirt should cost... I have some Paul Fredrick shirts and like them, though I find the laundry shrinks the collars more than some brands. Be sure to check their clearance pages. I have had good luck at Lands End Overstocks, but that has been over several years. At the moment, they seem to have two checked shirts in spread collars, neither of them terribly exciting. I believe Joseph Turner and Charles Tyrwhitt are the two new players on the English Shirt scene, each of them running a discount about as often as Joseph Bank. However, some of the more established names do run sales, especially at the end of the season- TM Lewin may be going after the discount market, too. But Tyrwhitt's idea of a sale is sometimes $50, which seems to be a lot.They have some lovely cotton and wool ones at just $70 each, which is said to be half off.

On the subject of Lands End more broadly, I have been very disappointed in their menswear offerings of late- not the quality, but the selection. They seem to have abandoned much of the suit business and most of their jackets are ready-aged, unconstructed, etc.

If you get really lucky, you might find a great red-and-blue tattersall from J Peterman in the world of vintage and N.O.S. It has a slight nap and comes in S-M-L, but does quite well with a tie.
