I come from a long line of moonshiners on both the maternal and fraternal sides of the family. The most concise written description I have found is to be found in FireFox, Volume 5 I believe. It includes requirements for and contruction of the still, what goes into the still and when, and lastly how to proof the whisky.
I have all six volumes of FireFox and will not willingly part with any, as they are out of print. They are, however, available online last I knew.
Any idiot can run a still. It does take some experience and dedication to the art to make good whisky, though.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?
