Well, depends on what you're shopping for, does it not?

Looking back over this thread I found this comment rather apt.
I have never been mistaken for a Scot going by the sound of my voice, but I have been mistaken for an Englishman.
When I explain that I am from Cape Town, some folk still don’t think I sound South African.
But nobody from Britain makes that mistake.

Mike

On the original post,
Yeah I get that kind of junk too. Especially from the drummer in our church worship band. He's the kind of guy whose natural default setting is to pick on folks and he keeps refering to my wear as womanly and that the "only thing about that outfit that's manly is the boots". He needs to remember that those guys in "skirts" typically punch above thier weight when facing off against the be-trousered. He means well enough but it is still annoying. I think once I get to know him better I'll ask him to lay off but for now I at least know he's just joking around. And of course my pastor is a great guy but he's still a "good 'ol boy" and a marine so he has a problem with it too. Funny, he never had a problem when I would wear Dashikis and linen/east indian apparel with flip flops during church. I guess if you're going to kilt you had better have a thick skin and good anger control techniques.

"Don't own one," was a reply.
"Really?" says I.
I think this might be an appropriate response to "Where are your bagpipes?" -- simply answer, "Oh, do you always carry bagpipes when wearing the kilt?"
However, almost any answer is either rude or in danger of provoking further trouble. Perhaps a smile is the best answer.

Indeed, how do you look Scottish? I am also one-eighth Scottish. Not sure what my Scottish great-grandfather looked like.
Yeah, I am actually a good deal more than a quarter Scottish. Could only get the lineage from the grandmother and couldn't find living relatives to tell me how much Scottish was from the grandfather's side but the quarter is definite through her and if history is to be believed, I am closer to half Scottish. But I still look more Yaqui indian than Scottish because of my father even though that percentage is far lower. Folks always tell me I don't look Scottish and I just want to ask them, "Well what would you like? A half drunk, red haired, pissed off, fighting, bagpiper, with blue face paint, who talks like James Doohan from Star trek?!". It is kind of silly what people expect vs reality somtimes.

I pronounce it as "Lamb-ant" their is a more french sounding version "La-mont" cause Scotland and France were allies for centuries and until the turn of the 20th century Scotland and France had joint citizenship.
All the best,

This actually REALLY annoys me. Some people insist on gaining a particular accent when pronouncing a single word in sentence, then revert back to their normal accent, and it sounds ridiculous to me. Speak with your usual tongue and call it good. As well traveled as I am, I've never hear anyone but an American do this. I've never heard a Scot try and speak with an American accent to pronounce anything, nor a French person, nor an Arab... etc. I speak with a mid-western American accent, so all of my words are going to sound like that, unless I'm speaking a different language altogether.
