Butt/Waist ratio
I've begun to see that different kilts handle the butt vs. waist measurements differently (better?) Most contemporary kilt manufacturers sell (off the peg) kilts with only waist and length measurements. In some models, when there is sufficient amount of fabric and fullness built in, a large butted guy is OK. There is still that problem of rear hem creep when he sits down, but overall the apron falls nicely and the front hem stays near the knee. Other manufactures, seems to build a less full kilt and the extra girth around the guy's hips (especially when he sits and the butt spreads), takes up more of the kilts fabric, requiring knees to be kept together at all times and the front hem to ride up into the lap.
I'm sure other guys have encountered this situation. We're not all built alike and some guys carry their weight on their hips and not around the waist (which is more healthful), but that can least to mis-fitting kilts unless the manufacturer takes this third measurement into consideration. I wonder what suggestions you can offer.
Regards,

Well, thats why I have to order made to measure kilts, hence having to pay more. My waist is a 32 and my hip /seat is 40 inches. When I wear a kilt thats not made for my hip size, it flares to much around the hips, so UK, and SW, and such are not optioons for me.

That's why there are still some of us out there that do ONLY custom work.
The only 'off the rack' kilts in my shop are some to show customers the construction quality and to give them something to try on to 'get the feel of a kilt'.
The waist vs hip numbers are more important on lower waisted kilts than they are on traditional waisted ones.
That's why on my upgrade of my website for '06 there will be additional measurments for Fell height and waist slope. in addition to the traditional Waist/Hip/Drop.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

I don't know if they still have them, but UK had a lot of kilts on the "Scratch and Dent" Rack that had been made with a larger "booty" line than intended. you might give them a call and see if they still have them.

This post has the horrible song "I Like Big Butts" going through my mind now.
Seriously, for those of us more generously endowed in the posterior, a custom tailored kilt is a true blessing.

This is why i prefer kilts over trousers any day - i have big thighs & a big butt from too many years of working at a gym & jumping up & down & screaming at people. to find pants that fit my legs & waist is impossible - i invariably end up with a few extra inches in the waistband in order to be able to walk in the trousers without doing major dermabrasion on my legs caused by thigh constrction. With kilts no such worries - now just have to eworry aboutthe number of pleats covering my big old butt.
if i recall correctly, on one of the casual kilt maker's sites, there is a facility for specifying a 'gut cut' kilt which allows for those with extra 'overhang' on the front so that when the kilt is worn the bottom egde stays pretty much parallel with the floor - front & back

Thanks for nearly getting me slapped yesterday Glassman!! you put this damned song in my head & I was singing it quietly to myself on the elevator in my office building, without realising it. A rather well endowed (posterior-wise) lady overheard & thought i was making fun of/coming on to her. she was not amused. thank goodness for express elevators!!!

Now that's funny! And it could have gone the other way. Imagine what would have happened if the elevator got stuck and she thought you were coming on to her!!!!

Most off-the-rack dealers have some sort of preset ration that all their kilts use. The one I have seen a lot is hips 4" bigger than the waist. If the difference is any greater than this, the kilt will definitely pull up in the back because the material just has more distance to cover.
The only way to get past this is to go custom made.
