You were walking back from the ice cream shop?
Presumably you had been acquiring ice cream.
So something had to happen that was on the negative side.
Those of us who should not eat ice cream might find it difficult to maintain amiability with those who do eat ice cream and are not accosted.
Humph!

I've never heard a Scot try and speak with an American accent to pronounce anything, nor a French person, nor an Arab... etc. I speak with a mid-western American accent, so all of my words are going to sound like that, unless I'm speaking a different language altogether.
How about regionally specific colloquialisms?

Are you lactose intolerant? If so I'm sorry. Not trying to rub it in. I make candies and pastries for my wife's boss who is lactose intolerant. You know how hard it is to come up with a good truffle recipe that doesn't use cream or butter?
Though please let me add no one should have ice cream (ok maybe a broken hearted teen age girl) especially me with bad triglycerides but occasionally you have to be willing to pay the price.

Looking back over this thread I found this comment rather apt.
I have never been mistaken for a Scot going by the sound of my voice, but I have been mistaken for an Englishman.
When I explain that I am from Cape Town, some folk still don’t think I sound South African.
But nobody from Britain makes that mistake.

Mike
When I come over to America I often get mistaken for an Australian. I was in a bar once when some of the guys started singing 'Waltzing Matilda'. I just smiled and let them get on with it.

Just a tendency towards carbohydrate saving which makes me sigh every time I stand on the scales. It wouldn't be quite so bad if I was intolerant - I tolerate everything very well - that is, really, the problem.
I don't mind not eating the boring things such as white bread pasta and rice - but ice cream - particularly the nut and honey ice cream I used to make. OK, and the mint and chocolate chip, and the strawberry, and the apricot - and the peach, ooooh the peach - oups, must mop the keyboard.

A smile is often the best response to a comment, positive or negative.
OrangeHaggis most generously sent me an old tammie of his, in Lovat blue.
I was wearing it on entering the office one day as a colleague of mine, a Scots lass who settled in South Africa as a teenager and has an Afrikaner husband, was walking out. She remarked to me: “Gee, Mike, you look like a real Hielander in that bunnet!”
I grinned from ear to ear!
Regards,
Mike
