This is true! It's just a bit hard when the informaiton provided is all I have to go by. And I don't know if he still resides in Arizona, only that he did when I was conceived. And he was not the man on my birth certificate. It is also difficult in that Mike Brown is a common name lol

Nothin beats the old-fashioned way...ask your family questions about your ancestry and whence your family came from. That is precisely how I began, by asking my parents, then my grandparents, and fortunately I was blessed to even ask my great-grandparents (though that was when I was quite young - they have since passed away).

DNA works well too...I've done it in order to pinpoint which branch of the Macphersons I descend from, as tradition and history states that there has always been three main Macpherson lines that are direct descendents from Gillechattan Mor, the progenitor of the Clan Macpherson. Good luck mate and good on ya for being interested in your family heritage and taking the first step into the journey! Enjoy the experience!

We all like to think that "if we look in the right places, we will find the right answers". The cruel truth is that quite often the answer is not to be found. Until really quite recently it was easy for a person to change their name and hundreds of thousands did so. By accident or design or laziness, names got changed.

By all means, people should try and trace their heritage, but be aware that not every enquiry will lead to a noble ancestor - most will lead nowhere. Some, unfortunately might lead to thieves or traitors or murderers.

As I used to tell my son, "If you don't want to hear the answer - don't ask the question".

I am not much interested in nobility, I just would like to know about my history. As it stands I only know about 3 generations back, barely, and only on my mother's side.

Go to www.familysearch.org
It's free to do searches. Put in any names or info you know into the search engine. Living people are not listed, but if you have names two or three generations back you should be able to find something.
Doing family genealogy is like being a detective. There is no easy path and some people stay with the search for a lifetime.
