I think for daywear more muted tones work best for diced hose.

To my eye, the combination of the military tartan and the bold red/black diced hose would have too much of a military look to it. If it were me, I'd choose solid hose for daywear, or hose with a fancy pattern cuff to them if you wanted something more eye-catching than solid.

Thanks again, everyone; the advice is appreciated!
It's so nice to have the experts at X Marks as a sounding-board.
So, thinking about formal hose...:

I am a frequent wearer of the House of Cheviot Argyll top hose. In fact I have all the tops offered. Recently I purchased the full tartan hose which I have worn in more formal occasions. After this thread, I will them for day wear, too. Dunadd Trading Company is also carrying the military type hose; red/black, red white. Those are on my LIST.

Were I to wear that military MacKenzie Seaforth kilt, yes I would wear red & white diced hose in the evening and Lovat Green self-coloured hose in the day, in keeping with the military. (It's a purely military tartan, like Gordon and Erracht Cameron, and my "eye" can't forget that fact.)
Now you might get somebody to knit you a pair of these deerhead motif hose...
