I just purchased a copy of Veronica Gainford's _Designs for Knitting Kilt Hose & KNickerbocker Stockings_ in order to get that same pattern. It's a must have book for many kilt hose knitters.

Be sure to read the Amazon reviews on this book. . . while anyone who would tackle diced hose is probably not a novice, the reviews make it clear that this book is for very advanced knitters (not a straight pattern book, no indication of yarn quantity, few pictures, etc.).

There's another thread on this topic that may have some info useful to you here. IIRC there is discussion of various pattern sources buried within the thread.

That pic you posted is fabulous! I want the little pouch in the background (too small to be a sporran?).

The pattern you want from the Gainford book is "large shepherd's plaid." My wife knit these hose from it:

For comparison, here are hose knit using the "small shepherd's plaid" pattern:

I do remember my wife saying thatshehad to adjust the pattern quite a bit, especially to allow for the proper decrease. Good luck!

Gainsford's book is out of print- any ideas on where I can get an inexpensive copy or a copy of the pattern?

Not only is it in print again (since 2006) but knitpicks.com
has it on sale for 9 bucks. Also available at Amazon.

You should be able to turn up several references here with the search function. As others have noted, it does not have many specific patterns, but lots of good information. What you're seeking would be an Argyll (or Argyle) pattern done as a fitted knee sock.
