Livery colours are usually derived from the first named metal and colour as they appear in the blazon of a coat of arms. So, if the shield is Argent (silver, usually depicted as the colour white) and the principle charge, in this instance let's say a lion, is Azure (which is blue) then the livery colours would be blue and white.
Wearing diced hose in your livery colours would be an exceptionally sly thing to do. Go for it!
Good thing I'm not my clan chief. Oddly, his livery colors are white and white.
