First of all, the writer misunderstands the kilt itself. It is MEN’S CLOTHING. There is nothing dainty, soft or effeminate about a real kilt. They are tough, thick, hearty garments that have a long tradition of being male in form and fashion so his argument that they are women’s clothing is nonsense. Second of all, he misuses those Bible verses towards his own ends. It saddens me that this type of closed minded hate is many people’s image of the church. The rest of us suffer because a scant few are overly vocal in their misunderstanding of not only Christianity but the world itself as scriptures apply to it. I wrote this man an email in response to his insulting article and have included it as follows.
Dear sir,
As a forward I would like to say that this letter is not ment to inflame, but to respond. Please take it as such and with an open and loving heart as a message from a brother in Christ. A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. Proverbs 15:5
I would respectfully ask that you remove the article you posted about kilts on your site. I am a devout Christian, of Scottish heritage, and have done exhaustive research on both the Biblical applications you put forth as well as kilts themselves. I find your article to be ill informed and your reasoning to be shoddy in the extreme. Some the things that you say would be downright laughable if they were not so insulting in nature. Your words are inflammatory rather than helpful and offer up a blantant misrepresentation of not only the Biblical verses but also of the kilt and the public view of the kilt as well. Bifurcated garments are an extremly recent addition to fashion historically speaking. Kilts were designed for a mans use. Kilts as we know them today are rugged and hearty garments that predate trousers by many hundreds of years and have basis in fashions that stretched back thousands of years before that. My guess (based upon the article) is you have a personally negative view of the kilt. It seems that you are closed off to cultural or personal differences that, though the Bible does not state them as sinful unless twisted and misused, you have chosen to say are sin because you yourself do not understand or wish to tolerate those differences. I believe in the word of God as given; not as interpreted or picked at by men. I do not expect a positive response from you on this matter as I have seen some of your other posts and have seen how you typically use negativity and attack rather than an approach of loving guidance. All I can say is this, I wish you well and may God bless your search for knowledge wisdom. May He give you the discernment to tell the difference between opinion and scripture. May He grant all who are of the Body to love one another as themselves and have peace between them.
God bless,
Hugh
I sincerely hope that he will see how coarse and cruel he has been on this and many other issues and realize that law and love must work hand in hand for Christianity to exist as Christ intended.
Thanks for reading,
Hugh
Hugh, I like you! I didn't write anything to him because I'm pagan, and by that one virtue alone, not only would I not be listened to, but I would only help reinforce the guy's delusions! One small criticism that I would offer, though, is that you didn't mention that the traditional kilt is designed for a mans hip and waist structure and that women can't wear them in the manner in which they're meant to be worn because their hips are too wide and their natural waist is too low, making the kilt an exlusively masculine garment.

Everyone knows that Real Men Wear Kilts. The writer of that article isn't worth a second thought.

The thing that guys like that (the anti-kilt guy) don't realize is that not everyone can be reached by "fire and brimstone". Some are but some are not. I certainly would not be willing to listen if I were not a Christian and somebody just started yelling at me. I AM a Christian and I STILL don't like it. I believe that salvation comes through Christ and him alone. I may desparately wish that others share that belief but I don't feel like I am supposed to cram it down people's throats until I have no communication with them anymore. Maybe I'm wrong and I should be a little more forcefull but my ministry to people is to lovingly serve them and make my beliefs known (kindly and with humility) so they understand why I am the way I am and how I differ from the man I once was. If they allow it to go further than that then it is their choice and I would welcome the conversation joyfully. I cannot save anyone. Hopefully I have not alienated anyone with these posts and if you wish to ask questions or dispute my beliefs then PM me and I'm fine with that. I hope that website guy gets the point.
Hugh

I know I should patiently point out that other parts of the Old Testament are conveniently ignored - like the rules on diet and taking your little spade and water pot and going outside the town wall when you need to - go - outside the town wall. Even though it is pretty obvious that it is just being plundered for suitably bendable verses.
What I feel like doing is giving the fellow a good swat with my blue denim camo kilt that is only half completed due to it being so hard to sew.
That would make him alter his opinion on the softness of kilts.
Even the background music on the web page was just plain wrong. Music to sneer along with.
Isn't there something in C S Lewis' The Screwtape Letters about using apparently Christian teaching in such a way as to drive people away from the Truth? That is still a terribly accurate little book in many ways.

That is exactly what's done. The scroll is now finished and in use. It's about 3 feet tall, and about 50 feet long unrolled. Rolled up on 2 rolls about 6 inches in diameter.
We now return you to your originally scheduled thread.

I don't understand his views, but his history of photography is off too:
The photo to the right shows what men wore in the Old Testament.

As others have pointed out before me, this chap is a little off his rocker.
Nobody in the Bible wore trousers.
There was one individual in the whole of Israel who had to wear underpants, and that was the High Priest. Nobody else was required to, and I greatly doubt that anyone else dared to, or cared to.
I do want to take issue with Nighthawk, though, where he says alcohol is sinful. Actually, while Proverbs has a warning for those who are too fond of their beer and their wine, the drinking of either is specifically not condemned in Scripture.
Paul wrote to Timothy that he should take a little wine for his stomach’s sake, and the drinking of wine is a tradition from Judaism (in the seder meal) that has been carried through into Christianity (in the eucharist).
The only scripture that condemns alcohol is the Qur’an.
As for keeping cats, in the Middle Ages, only witches (pagans, that is) kept them. They used them for divination. Christians generally did not keep cats.
In South Africa today, black people still (by and large) don’t keep cats.
But there is no scriptural command about them, and I have had a cat in the house (at least one) since I was first married. We always kept them when I was a kid, too.
Thank you, Hugh, for dropping Mr Stewart a line. But I doubt that he will pay any attention to what you say on the matter.
There are people who campaign against Harry Potter on the grounds that it teaches devil-worship. This was the first thing I checked when I read the first Potter book. I have enjoyed every one of them, and have seen all but the latest Potter movie. No devil-worship there at all. In fact, no real witchcraft either.
Let’s just ignore the guy.
Shalom,
Mike

I've taken the morning (out of my busy schedule) to craft his foil hat. I had to 'guesstimate' hat size.
