    It is, but probably not in the way(s) that many people seem to think it is. Without getting into the etymology of the terms used in the Bible, suffice it to say that in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), the Devil and Hell are mentioned very, very little. Some theologians say that the Jewish people never believed in hell or the Devil... Now, I don't exactly agree entirely -- I think that it's not that they didn't believe it, but rather that a) their conceptions and definitions were very different to that what is portrayed as the modern, Christian idea of hell and the Devil, and b) they had very little use for the ol' bugger and preferred to devote as LITTLE time, space, and energy to such things as possible.

    I tend to agree with that philosophy. I really don't understand this preoccupation and fascination that many people have about hell and Satan. I really don't. The Bible even teaches us NOT to focus on such things. From the New Testament, Paul's letter to the Philippians has THIS to say:

    Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)

Therefore, any written word that calls on this being to pass judgements on others, must be looked on as the writers opinion. I have evidence that my kilts are real. Just sayin..

    I don't see anything wrong with his point. So far we have had many lines of Christianity, Judaism, and Paganism take part in this discussion. It was only a matter of time before agnostics and atheists took part. That said I never wanted this to become a "what religion (if any) is best" conversation. We are talking about a person and his view of kilts.

    And that is the biggest problem I have with people like him proclaiming "truth." Truth is that my coffee table is make of cherry wood. Faith is that there is a god at all. I am a person of deep faith. Never- ever- will I try to force my way of thinking on anyone!! Yes, I believe in the old gods. But I also believe in the God of Moses. Why? Because they are one and the same!! We give God different names and recognize different aspects, but in the end... there is only one God. There are just multiple ways of understanding Him. And you know what? The good people of this forum have made it clear throughout this entire thread that we all realize and respect this! It's just one of the many things about us that soundly proves that man dead wrong about kilties lacking in refinement. We here on this board, as evidenced in this thread, are more enlightened and tolerant and accepting than any other group of people I have had the pleasure of associating with. Makes me proud to be part of it. Here's to my next 4000 posts with you lot!!

    That is one of the best and politest expressions of that point of view I've ever heard or read. This is a principle that we should probably all bear in mind if ever tempted to declare that our own spiritual beliefs are truer than those that are held by others. We are all free to believe what we will, but no one is obliged to agree with us or live their lives according to our beliefs.
