Thank you all for the feedback. I'm waiting to hear back from Dalgl;iesh if they can do a 'marled' grey (I REALLY like that idea) to make a final decision, but I like the grey with the blue lines outlining the black.

Is ANYONE going to guess the tartan it was based on? I'll give you a hint... it's not Scottish.

That doesn't really narrow it down much Rocky.

I'll take a stab, but this kind of stuff is WAY outside my lane of expertise. Although the coloring seems to be similar to the German American Heritage taratan that you've done previously. Could that be it?

No... it's based on a relatively OLD tartan (roughly the end of the 16th C). It was discovered in a bog at Flanders Townland near Dungiven in 1956 by a Mr William G Dixon.

Ulster District Tartan WR1196. I definitely see the similarity now--at least I think I do.

This one appears to be more like Ulster Red (#792), which is loosely based on 1196. In 1196 the "squares" are not nearly as regular as they are in 792. And the "squares" are very regular in Rocky's version.

Wow. I'm totally out of my league...although, I am a fan of both and Rocky's new design as well.

Some neat design work there, Rocky. Personally I like both the change to a blue background and the switch of the black lines to turquoise (they would not work together, though).
The Ulster tartan (probably in its Ulster Red form) is the one I have in mind for my wife.

Scott, a word of warning on tartans derived from coats of arms: while the word gold is used on Scotweb to describe a certain shade of yellow, my personal preference is for a clearer yellow to represent anything gold.
And silver does not translate well into tartan either. Rather just use white.
While the language of blazon refers to the metals or and argent, they are invariably shown as yellow and white when rendered in cloth (at least, when this is done properly).
Metallic shades do not work well in cloth, whether in the form of an armorial banner or as tartan.
    Regards,
    Mike
