I'm leaning twords the brown/tan windowpane. I have a tendency to go all matchy matchy with my business suites. I don't want that with my kilts I must look at the photo galleries more. I don't know who puts the outfits together for USAK I assume Rocky or his wife but the style shown on their site makes me drool.

There's no need to "match" the jacket to the tartan. I used to try but broke myself loose of that mindset. That being said, you can get colors and patterns that look horrible with certain kilts. I have one that looks good with several of my kilts, but it looks pretty strange with a couple of them. What looks bad depends on your tastes.

I like a lot of different tweeds, but would echo Rocky. The charcoal one will look good with any tartan, or even solid colored kilt.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

Ditto. it doesn't have to match, but it shouldn't clash (and some would challenge me on even that statement).

Yes if the jacket's colours are too close to those of the kilt, the entire outfit loses much of its potential.

To me the keywords are coordinate, or harmonise, rather than match.

With Highland dress a true "clash" doesn't seem to happen very often, but in my opinion it's happening here:

Why it clashes to my eye is that the jacket is based around gentle earthen tones, but the kilt is based around highly saturated neon dayglo tones. No the dayglo periwinkle neckwear doesn't help. (Actually the tartan itself contains a clash between the earthen and neon dayglo. I don't care for it at all.)

That's such a lovey jacket and it would have looked great with nearly any tartan they might have chosen. Seems like they went out of their way to create a clash.

(Offtopic: a year or so ago an FA Cup Tie was delayed because "the match official declared kit clash". Couldn't happen in US sports!)

I was taught - warm colors with other warm colors; cool colors with cool.

I think the chap in the photo looks fine (I may change the sporran though), though I am not entitrely fond of those sort of neckties - they look unkept and ultra-modern (uber fashionable) to me for Highland day attire. I tend to think the high contrast between the tartan in his kilt and the tweed in his jacket and waistcoat is rather appealing - of course, this is only my opinion.

I tend to agree with you, Kyle. I hate the style of tie but the rest looks fine.

I forget where this picture originally came from, but on the original site it could be enlarged. It appears that the tartan in question is a muted Anderson (a tartan that ain't easy to mute - it's loud by nature) and I think it works well with this jacket, though I also don't think that the matchy-matchy thing we do with Saxon wear needs to be done with Highland attire. Of course, my opinion is probably influenced by the fact that my great-grandfather was an Anderson and I'd love a kilt in and Anderson tartan someday!

Richard and I disagreed with each other about this picture early last year and I think of it every time someone asks about matching. Style is an individual thing and if we all liked the same thing there'd be no need for a site like this and if it did exist it would be BORING!

    Regards,

    Brian
