The Tartan authority is recommending small, dark or toned gotchees for civilian use.

A bit of a tempest in a teapot was started when Brian Wilton made his feelings clear on this one and the STA was made to look like they were out to destroy hallowed tradition!

I have been on this forum long enough to have heard many respected members urge the wearing of something under the kilt. Reasons have been varied: protecting the kilt, protecting you from the kilt, proactively protecting the sensibilities of others when the chance of exposure exists and (my favorite) the dreaded Highland midge (a voracious cousin of theirs lives in my neck of the woods). It seems as though it's different horses for different courses. Opinions will vary but each must decide for himself or herself.

My first kilt in 1955 came with the dreaded matching tartan trews. Coarse, tight, uncomfortable, very restrictive and potentially damaging, as I recollect they lasted less time than it takes to read through these posts. To make matters worse I was mildly allergic to wool which made sitting down in a kilt something of an ordeal, so makeshift linings were constructed of coloured handkerchiefs held in with small safety pins and provided a quite satisfactory solution for a couple of decades.

When I had to wear a heavy weight military kilt the problem was only made tolerable by the fact that sitting down in it was rarely required, since it was mainly for parade and ceremonial occasions. The "hair" shirt that went with it produced a similar reaction and was more problematic than the kilt!
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
