Styro may be a problem but the type of foam that's used to line camera and gun cases might not...the stuff that's sort of like a grey sponge consistency.
One of my friends crates art for international shipments and swears by a type of foam called ethafoam. Perhaps you could find out what size box is common across the world (must be some standardization, eh?) and get a block of the foam cut to those exterior dimensions and custom carve out compartments for the vessel and the book...that way the outer box, which will take most of the wear, could be replaced easily while the inner foam block could be used as long as possible. The foam would also help insulate the object from shock and keep it from rattling around in the box. Hopefully, there wouldn't be a problem with the quaiche tarnishing from contact or offgassing by the foam...I expect that if they use ethafoam in crates that hold these world art treasure, it must be pretty inert.

Thank you, Auld Argonian! Steve is a volunteer at the Royal BC Museum, so I'll have him check with the staff there.

Early this morning Bobbie and I began to set up the shop in preparation for the Kilt Night to share the Quaich.

The first we were able to share the Quaich with were X Marks members, "Roalco" and "Fiona The Good" who just happened to stop by the shop to pick up his new Kilt and Jacket.

Then Big Mikey decided that he should sign the book. Mikey was the first to sign the logbook of the Saltire so thought he would give someone else the chance to be first signing the log of The Quaich,

We will continue to post photos as people start to show up for the Kilt Night.

Good for you Steve; under the circumstances that's the very best place for the Quaich to start!

It is 11:00 pm, and I have just returned from the inaugural hosting of the Quaich -- which is still going strong. After supper, many in the original group returned to the Freedom Kilts shop, and sipping scotch are energetically debating all number of important things. I am going to bed. There will be photos in later posts.

Everything stops as Alex (cessna152towser) arrives.

Big Mikey and Holy Hector share a quiet moment in the afternoon sun.

We manage to get Sisu (Mikko) away from his kiltmaking for a moment.

Jewddah and Dave (Erin #1) make a grand entrance. As starving students went immediately went to the buffet.

We all then begin to mosey over to dinner.
Holy Hector, Chris (Bligeplug)and Mrs. ThistleDown.

Alex, Phyllis, and Mrs. Holy Hector are getting hungry.

Somebody forgot to tell Mikko that we were leaving.
