This is all vested in tradition and history. It must be seen in light of events of the time.

In essence, it is eldest sons, their sons; other sons, their sons; daughters, their sons. When that runs out then the line goes sideways from the currant monarch, to include cousins and nephews. Of course, illegitimacy or being a Roman Catholic (or married to a Roman Catholic) rules one out of the succession.

When Catherine produces a child, the whole 2000 odd all shuffle down to make room.

That is nuts! Howcome being a Roman Catholic knocks one out of the running? Does it happen to be related to King James?

Please guys religious issues have been raised before and has always derailed the threads.

This thread is there for those who wish to acknowledge and celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

    Period.

Many X Markers live in countries where she is either Head of State or Head of the Commonwealth.

It is NOT there for pro and anti monarchy arguments or religious ones or political ones.

So take this as a polite warning to stay on track.

    Thanks.

I digress too much sometimes, but I hope it's noted I didn't mean to spar anything by asking the question. I am a Biblical Studies major and I love church history and just wondered why it was they came up with that law. Sorry if it was taken in any way offensively to anyone, not my intentions and my apologies for sure!

Back on topic: How awesome that she is turning 85! Very blessed indeed, both Queen and Country. Long Live!

Ohhh also to clarify, when I said "that is nuts" I was referring to the massive shift and everything when Catherine produces an heir. Sorry if that was what was taken overtly definitive. I forget things come across differently online.

As I said, this is all historical and must be seen in context. We did cut off a King's head for bringing Catholic troops into the country. Things like this do not happen lightly.

There has been talk for a long time about repealing or modifying the Act of Settlement 1701 and the Royal Marriages Act 1772, but it would require the assent of about 15 countries, which have the Queen as Sovereign.

It is the system we have and it has served us for 310 years. There is very little more that can be said that would not get this thread closed down.

    Regards

    Chas

    Very factual and on-topic...

Chas...I think your answer was very factual...no problems as I see it. I understand Trefor's warning...in light of the previous comment...but you answered it with poise and grace! There should never be a problem with educating people.
