How important is a belt?

I prefer a belt because I like the look, but don't regularly wear one with a waistcoat or sweater that would cover it. But I take care to wear it at the top of the kilt...to me nothing, not even white hose, looks worse that a belt worn showing 3 or 4 inches of tartan.

The belt is not essential, but I think that without a waistcoat the kilted look is rather diminished without a properly proportioned belt. In my youth, not wearing one was "not done" and was considered that you were not properly dressed without one, if no waistcoat was being worn.Informally around the house, or doing the gardening-----when the staff were away(!!!!!) ------for example, then well, alright.

Interestingly for day wear, the (dare I say it?) traditional "prong" type belt buckle, usually in brass, was the expected version and the "plate"type buckle was exclusively for evening wear, if you so chose. Whilst this may raise an eyebrow of some of you, the "plate" buckle was regarded as a very much as "Johny come lately" attire, if worn during the day.

I guess I'm not as modern as I thought I was These are my guidelines as well.

For day wear, brown or black matters not. I prefer black and at a guess it is just over two inches wide.

I have no idea about evening kilt belts as I have never owned one(always worn a waist coat as an extra layer is required to keep warm in large highland buildings!) and I am afraid I have not taken much notice of their proportions.

Always wear a belt. 2 1/4 wide double prong black bridle leather. Sits well on my hip bone.

Personally hate belts... the only thing passing for a belt on me are sporran straps, which I've made by sewing kid belts together.

It takes all the comfort out of the kilt for me. Belts are rigid and biting. Might help that my hip/rump is 8" larger than my waist tho...

I don't wear a belt with my kilt. I've been told that same thing, that a belt is an accessory, not a necessity.
