Lightest tartan material?

Actually, the dress she's planning on making would be a reproduction of another dress she already has... but in a tartan pattern. It's a multi-layered dress with under-skirting in a black sheer fabric, and the outer fabric of the existing one is very, very thin and light. So in trying to reproduce it, the lighter the material we can find, the better.

The cost is something I'm kind of choking on, though. That's a minimum of $725 that must be spent on material. It'll be one expensive dress!

You don't happen to have any of their silk material laying around that I could get a swatch of, do you Matt?

I don't really, no. Sorry! But we ship out every bit of silk we get from them.

I still think the silk may be ideal for your purposes, but understand that is a lot of cash. Reading what you describe, I think the spring weight (8oz) wool will most likely work just fine. And at $55/yd is a lot less expensive!
