Wal-mart has a few types of these clamp type on their website.

Even though the website say they are not sold in stores, I found packs of six in the housewares section of my local Wal-mart. Price worked out to less than a couple bucks for each hanger.
They are felt lined on the clamping faces and they are more than strong enough to hold my 16 oz. 5 yarder.

Like others on this thread, I have had good success with Joe Austin's kilt hangers from Order of the Gael. They are very sturdy - comprised of three metal rods and 6 strong clips so that each third of the kilt is held up by two clips. They also have a rough-covered (felt?) wooden dowel that runs between the hanger arms on which you can hang a plaid, scarf, shawl, etc. They are expensive, however - $17.
I plan to strategically employ both hanging and rolling to combat the moth menace. We have a rather distinct moth season that runs from mid-spring through mid-summer. During that time I will roll my kilts and store them in a cedar chest. For the rest of the year I will hang them in my Kilt Kit with cedar bags, chips, blocks, etc.
Finally, at the end of moth season I will put rolled kilts into a deep freeze for a night or two. That should kill any moth eggs in the wool. I live in the mountains, so during the winter I can simply hang my kilt in an outdoor, unheated closet and achieve the same effect.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

They came today - save me a bunch of space in the closet, hang all the pleats dead straight. I'll monitor for a while, but so far, I'm pleased.

Assuming you mean the Order of the Gael hangers, mine came today as well - I believe they were on back order. They look well made. I will report results shortly.

Yup. One and the same. (Actually, two and the same.)

Those look like the ones I bought at Ikea for about a buck a piece.

Not even close. These are wider, have both the clips (in three rows) and the shoulder piece for a jacket, slots for loops, and a second crossbar for a plaid or for... whatever.

I'm sorry, probably a bit of confusion. I was referencing the link to Wallyworld that Fitzy posted.

Makes sense to me - I should have paid closer attention.

When I travel by plane with kilts I don't take hangers. I lay the kilts out in the motel room on the back of a chair or couch.
Riverkilt,
Since you are a non-skinny individual, as I am myself, do you find that the kilt on the HoG hanger, being essentially folded in thirds, is too wide to fit in your closet? When I put the kilt on the hanger, it extends past the hanger several inches on both sides. The portion on the inside of the closet gets those several inches folded over by the closet back wall.
