Because you said the bride asked you 'years ago' to wear the kilt, I would reconfirm with her because her mindset could have changed.

Sorry, I forgot to add that the bride has asked me on nearly every wedding 'discussion' if I would wear one, including recently

Jock Scot - I see what you mean about not showing off the kilt to the full. I will be hiring the MacGregor Hunting tartan (I know about the Cardney situation but I cannot get hold of the red and black. Plus I think the hunting one looks better).

    Tartan Cuff Kilt Hose

McCalls, one of the biggest highland outfitters in Scotland now supply kilt hose with a tartan cuff http://bit.ly/lKj1KG to match their Pride Kilts collection http://bit.ly/mE2nDq. I hear they're a popular rent and buy for weddings these days.

It follows the trend for kilts at weddings (certainly in Scotland) to use very dark tartans, sometimes even plain black. I've also seen many weddings where the outfits worn by guest are Prince Charlie or even relatively informal Swordsman jackets http://bit.ly/mR9l1o. A glance at the wedding notice section of any Scottish local paper that publishes photos quickly shows the variety of outfits being worn.

It really comes down to personal preference, it's quite normal in Scotland to see all three types of outfit at the same wedding, even if it does look a bit odd. I think in many cases men buy one kilt outfit, and that gets used for every wedding thereafter, regardless of what the other guests are wearing.

what if you were wearing a kilt of mostly white, such as a dress tartan, would white socks/hose be acceptable then? seems to me that they would compliment the colors well.

I think in that case, many would conclude that the white theme was being over done by more than just a tad.

In a recent thread on the Royal wedding there is a photo of a guest wearing a kilt with tweed jacket, waistcoat, coloured hose and regular brogues. I would think that a similiar outfit would be ideal for the wedding you are attending
