Wedding guest: black vs grey tweed Argyll?
The June wedding I am attending is at 4:00 PM--big, formal, High Church affair. The reception is slated to offically start at 6:30--even bigger, country club setting. This is NOT going to be a "stuffy" social gathering by any stretch; it will be a great time all the way around, and if this family's past weddings are any indication (and they are), it will last well into the wee hours.
Do I wear my venerable black Argyll or my new Lovat Grey jacket?
Yes, I know. Split the difference and wear charcoal gray. Unfortunately, I have the two bookends but not the book.
Thoughts?

It's a toss up. You can't go wrong with the Black Argyll, but I much prefer wearing tweed. The gray might work really well for a spring/summer wedding look.
Also, welcome to the forum.

Wear the black Argyle with the gray waistcoat. I am assuming there are waistcoats with these jackets.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Thanks for the welcome and reply.
I, too, like the lighter gray for summer. The only thing giving me pause is the formality and venue. "Black matches everything." Well, almost.

Firstly
Secondly
As you are a guest and the wedding starts at 4:00 I'd say generally I'd wear the Gray, unless of course the other guests will be more formal, if that is the case then the Black would be the way to go. I would suggest checking with the couple first.

And yes, both jackets were ordered with waistcoats to match.
Ehh, either would probably be all right. I'm sure Panache and/or McMurdo will have some good advice.
* Oops! McMurdo already did. *

My first choice would be to wear the grey tweed jacket. It would not be out of place, though, to wear the black jacket--with a 5 or 6 button waistcoat and a four-in-hand necktie. Just don't dress in black tie at 1600h.!!

My suggestion would be to set your level of dress to not exceed that of the members of the wedding party itself but come in just under that level. If they are in full black tuxes then the argyll might be okay, especially when dressed down with a contrasting waistcoat---either grey or tartan. Otherwise go with the grey. You are going to stick out of the crowd anyway you look at it since you will be kilted, so no reason to go overboard with extreme formal dress. Remember, it is an event for the bride and groom, wedding party and their parents to shine, and you do not want to detract from their evening.
