The Livingston wedding probably wasn't morning suit, but rather lounge suit level of formality. The fellow on the right was probably an army officer judging by his tie.
Aren't they lowlanders anyway?;-)

In the Argyll shot, a guest in the background is clearly wearing a morning coat, therefore his day jacket and waistcoat in dark blue worsted suiting (like my gray borrowed form the POW) with formal sporran would seem to be the highland convention for that level of formality. I don't have "So you're Going to Wear the Kilt" handy, but I believe Thompson details much the same for daytime formal and /or adapting the black argyle jacket w/o silver buttons, hitting much the same note.

<<They most certainly are NOT Lowlanders!>> You say that like its a bad thing. I'm quite familiar with Scottish ethnography and where various Livingtsons may fit in. (Note my ;-) )I'm a scion of the highlands, lowlands, and borders myself on variuos family lines. The Scottish population, as long as there has been a notion of Scottish nationality, is largley lowland (anglo-saxon), the highlanders being an often despised minority up until the ealry 19th century, when highland cultural markers, tartan, pipes, etc, were adopted by all Scots. Of course the gene pool is largely mixed today, and there is certainly no shame identifying as either highlander or lowlander. See Devine on "Highlandism" in his book, The Scottish Nation.

Based on the tie, and his noble/landowning lineage, army service would not be a stretch.
One thing you should know about UK weddings (above a certain socio-economic line) is that some percentage of guests just show up in morning coats by default whether specified or not. If the Livingstons (whose outfits I rather like) desired full daytime formal of all their guests, they likley would have taken it up a notch themselves a la Duke of Argyll. Nonetheless, those are great and correct day time kilt rigs.
