MacPherson Hunting Along the Colorado River

Took a jaunt down to Marble Canyon and Lees Ferry today. Wore my USA Kilts Casual in MacPherson Hunting. Was a windy day - but I braved it. According to my lady I only "flashed" my tail end once in a gust at Navajo Bridge - it was extra windy out over Marble Canyon.

This pic is at Little Cut above Page, Arizona. We stopped to help some ladies who got their van stuck in the sand at a viewpoint. Turned out best I could do for them was call AAA, but that worked. Saw the blossoming cactus and took this pic. That's Navajo Mountain in the faint distance between my head and the tree.

This pic was out on the old Navajo Bridge over Marble Canyon of the Colorado River. Those are the Vermillion Cliffs in the background.

Here's one of the house rocks that House Rock Valley is named for. Some folks say its because the rocks are as big as a house - other say its because you can live under them. A bit of wind in the pleats.

Had planned to spend some time on Paria Beach but the water was high and the beach was gone. That's Paria Riffle in the background. Too small to be a rapid but the first white water for folks launching at Lees Ferry for a down canyon trip.

Here's a shot of the old fort at Lees Ferry. The ferrymen were worried about attacks from the Navajo or Paiute tribes so they built a fort. Never did have to use it.

Other than that one flare that my lady saw, the USA Casual did fine in constant and strong winds. And that one "reveal" happened over the canyon where the wind does all sorts of tricky things.

Nice pictures. Do you really hike that country in sandals, what with cactii and rattlers? Perhaps it's too hot for proper boots.

Yup, I do hike with sandals in the heat - for that reason. In over ten years here I've yet to encounter a rattler. Common down around Phoenix and Tucson hiking. Have only run across a garter snake down in Glen Canyon. The rattlers are here. Just not saying hello to me. Met a lot down in the Sonoran Desert but they never struck like in the movies unless I approached them. Most rattlesnake bites happen to intoxicated, testosterone poisoned men in their 20s and 30s.....rest of us give them a wide berth. Little cactus around here...just scrub. Pretty easy to see and avoid.

Yesterday I was out on the River Trail up Glen Canyon and a guy going the other way commented how cool I must be. I assured him I was. Lovely breeze/wind blowing to cut the heat and the kilt allowed me to benefit from it.

Is Glen Canyon the one that was immersed but recently drained? Whichever that one is, I've always wanted to see it.

Ever meet someone who has been bit by a rattler and heard them describe it? I used to feel that way about poisonous snakes until I met someone who'd been bitten by a viper 30 years earlier. About that time I gave up on boots and went with flip flops! Our risk assessment skills aren't always good!

Heh. Hardly our natural habitat. Looks a bit dry, brown and elevated for my liking.

But Ron, you're looking good in the tartan! Creag Dubh!

Ron--your photo essays have always been a major draw to this forum for me.

    And Creag Dubh! indeed!

Come on down BK! Give me a heads up when you do.

Most of Glen Canyon was flooded by the Glen Canyon dam. The 15 miles downstream from the dam are much like it used to be, just the flow is controled by the dam, and the water comes out of the bottom of the dam so its 45 degrees rather than warm like the old days, and green instead of the old free flowing red.
