Nice pictures. Do you really hike that country in sandals, what with cactii and rattlers? Perhaps it's too hot for proper boots.

Yup, I do hike with sandals in the heat - for that reason. In over ten years here I've yet to encounter a rattler. Common down around Phoenix and Tucson hiking. Have only run across a garter snake down in Glen Canyon. The rattlers are here. Just not saying hello to me. Met a lot down in the Sonoran Desert but they never struck like in the movies unless I approached them. Most rattlesnake bites happen to intoxicated, testosterone poisoned men in their 20s and 30s.....rest of us give them a wide berth. Little cactus around here...just scrub. Pretty easy to see and avoid.
Yesterday I was out on the River Trail up Glen Canyon and a guy going the other way commented how cool I must be. I assured him I was. Lovely breeze/wind blowing to cut the heat and the kilt allowed me to benefit from it.

Is Glen Canyon the one that was immersed but recently drained? Whichever that one is, I've always wanted to see it.
Ever meet someone who has been bit by a rattler and heard them describe it? I used to feel that way about poisonous snakes until I met someone who'd been bitten by a viper 30 years earlier. About that time I gave up on boots and went with flip flops! Our risk assessment skills aren't always good!

Heh. Hardly our natural habitat. Looks a bit dry, brown and elevated for my liking.
But Ron, you're looking good in the tartan! Creag Dubh!

Ron--your photo essays have always been a major draw to this forum for me.
And Creag Dubh! indeed!

Nice. Hope to do the same thing this summer and/or fall.

Come on down BK! Give me a heads up when you do.
Most of Glen Canyon was flooded by the Glen Canyon dam. The 15 miles downstream from the dam are much like it used to be, just the flow is controled by the dam, and the water comes out of the bottom of the dam so its 45 degrees rather than warm like the old days, and green instead of the old free flowing red.
