Yes, if you notice the date of the tartan it was actually created July 2010. It was not formally registered until now. Strathmore has it available - I was privledged enough to see a bolt of it on their shelves when I was there last fall.

Hello Matthew is was created 7th January 2010 (07/01/2010), I know in America dates are written in this order Month/Day/Year...in the UK its written in this order Day/Month/Year.

Another note: the registration notes: - The Afghanistan Memorial tartan was designed to mark, not celebrate, the conflict which started in October 2001. The light and dark browns signify the parched and arid countryside of Afghanistan; the blue is representative of the impressive mountain ranges with the white of the snow bound peaks. The blood red is the tragedy of the human cost on all sides.

Just for completeness, this is the ribbon worn by the UK forces in Afghanistan.

The ribbon consists of a broad central red stripe, flanked each side by a stripe of navy blue and one of light blue, to represent the three services, with an outer stripe of light brown, to represent the Afghan landscape.

Sorry, but to my eyes, the men in that amazing photograph seem to be wearing baggy khaki shorts, rather than kilts. Am I missing some detail to show otherwise?

I am not trying to debate semantics or be nit picky but for clarification, and I phrase in the interogative, would this not be the ribbon earned
for service in Afghanistan rather than worn by forces in Afghanistan?

The point of my post was to show that there are other colours available for tartan design, besides the American service ribbon and the Canadian Campaign Star ribbon.

Seeing you have brought it up, I will correct my first statement.

It is the ribbon worn by UK servicemen on their 2nd and subsequent tours as the medal is only awarded once the servicemen have completed the tour of duty and have returned home. Servicemen in Afghanistan on their first tour of duty do not wear the ribbon.

The soldiers of the Kings Regiment Liverpool, later the Kings Regiment (Manchester and Liverpool) after amalgamation in 1958, and now the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment(Kings,Lancashire and Border) did not wear kilts. I think the Photo in question was to show that conflicts in Afghanistan is not new.

Thanks for the clarification, I understand your point quite well as you explained it. Again, I wasn't trying to be nit picky, but as a veteran myself I was just bringing out that a campaign ribbon is earned often at great sacrifice.
