Here's a photo I took last weekend which shows the Univerity of California Riverside tartan to much better effect:

It's an amazing tartan. The blue is so rich and vivid. And the 'gold' portion really gives a gold look, though of course it's done with yellow white etc.
As I pointed out before, blue and yellow when mixed normally results in green and it's a danger to anyone designing a "blue & gold" tartan.
The designer(s) of the UCR tartan avoided that, I suspect, by moving the blue to the purple end of the scale, the yellow to the orange end of the scale, putting them more or less opposite on the 'colour wheel' so that when mixed they become a neutral shade.
(Something tartan designers must keep in mind, because each colour appears in its pure form but also appears mixed in equal portions with every other colour present in the tartan.)
