If it helps, here are some photos of a 6 yard knife pleated kilt I made for myself.

Without getting it out of my closet and counting, I think there are either 18 or 19 pleats across the back, which are about 1.25" wide.
For comparison, here is another kilt I own, which is only 5 yards.

The pleats on this one are also about 1.25" wide, but they are not as deep. How many pleats you get and how wide they are will have a lot to do, as well, with the size of the sett of the tartan.
I've made a lot of this style of kilt for David Pope. Maybe he can chime in on this thread, or you might want to send him a PM. Here's a photo of him wearing a 6 yard kilt in the Carolina tartan.

Another from the same event.

Those pleats are the absolute straightest, neatest pleats I've ever seen...what is the secret?? What craftsmanship...and David must have a perfectly flat/round buttocks! LOL!

Agreed! Wonderful pleats! although I suspect that David keeps takes some pride in his appearance (always looks rather snappy to me!) and keeping his pleats looking just right is probably something he puts some effort into. Either that, or indeed, a few hours a week on the stair-master!
Cheers,

As much as I'd like to take credit, the pleats are the result of Matt's great craftsmanship and a good hang on a "Stillwater" kilt hanger....
I'll echo Matt's comments. My hand-down favorite style of kilt is a 6-yard knife-pleated heavyweight. In my mind, the best of all worlds.

Thanks everyone for the input!
Sounds like the heavy-weight 6-yard knife-pleated is the way to go.
Cheers!

You look great mate! We would be like twins if we attended a games together! Add Sandy into the mix and that would be quite the fearsome threesome! LOL!
Well done mate, you wear the 'Garb of the Old Gaul' well,

Re: Red-laced brogues/(p)review my attire...
Well, after some waiting...and some mind-changing:
I decided against the Montrose (due to heat considerations!) and instead opted for a regulation doublet and waistcoat.
Plain dress shoes instead of the ghillies or buckles (partly due to cost).
So after placing a few orders...
This (well, some of these things!) arrived today in the post!
So, I have pretty much got my final wedding outfit sorted! I am still waiting on my new Artificer sporran, so in it's place, I've taken pics of the lovely horse-hair sporran my dad found me (or as my mum referred to it, "that hideous, hairy thing!"). However, I'll cut her a break, as I have just given it a wee bath, and lightly polished up the silver- so it does look better than it did before.
The package from my parents in New Zealand arrived this morning, with hose (2 pairs), sporran and a box of breakfast cereal... (something we can only get in NZ).
Then... this afternoon, my regulation doublet and waistcoat arrived! It is made to measure from MacKenzie Frain, and I think it is stunning... the detailing is fantastic, right down to the silk cord on the tashes. (One sleeve appears short, but that is due to not re-adjusting quickly enough after positioning my camera).
I will get a new shirt and proper tie (yes, this one's pre-tied!)
My new kilt (Gunn weathered, heavyweight, Lochcarron 6 yard (knife-pleat- to the red stripe)) arrived a month or so ago, and I've been dying to post the pics, but didn't have the rest of the gear yet, so here goes, finally!

with the red socks

with the grey socks
The decision may be already made on the sock option, unfortunately, as the red ones don't seem to have quite as much give... ever so slightly tight.
(I still welcome comments and suggestions!)
and lastly, some of the detail from the sporran cantle. I assume it's not solid silver, as there is no hallmark, however, I am very impressed with the deep relief of the casting- it really looks beatiful to me!

Well, thanks again everyone for all the great advice! Now I just have to wait another 8 months for the wedding...
Cheers!

That is a GREAT look, nice work! I prefer the greyish hose anyway because they let your garter ties stand out more.
