    Err, yeah I know....
I am reluctant because my proper 18th century weskit and muslin shirts are with my aunt being combined with other fabric and re-purposed into much improved Highland attire.

It just doesn't seem right to wear a BP with a t-shirt.
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

what great luck. It is very rare to find that length of tartan cloth in the US. I found a 4 yard Kennedy 30 years ago at Vogue Fabrics and have not seen anything else since. It used the modern green so it is not ideal historically. Back then reenactors wrote that you needed 9yards for the kilt, I am glad I only got 4.

    Congratulations!

First I really like the find.

9 yards is an old confusion. Weaving looms of the past (say a typical weaving loom in a common highland home of a weaver) only wove cloth around 25" wide. You would require about 9 yards to make a 4 1/2 yard belted plaid. One would cut the fabric in the middle making two lengths of 4.5 yards of 25" width and stitch the two lengths together.

I have a 5 yard belted plaid and a 4 yard one. Both are very sufficient. I suggest cutting two yards away and using that portion to make "cahdah" (period tartan socks, stitched to fit the wearer). It would be beneficial to have them as a good accessory to that outfit. I have EEE wide feet and made my pair of cahdah like Christmas stockings so that I can get my feet through the ankle portion. I use two elastic loops that fit over my legs to help hold them up. Then I tie my DIY garter ties around similar to how and where you would use them with a modern kilt outfit.

    Best of luck.
