Box for shipping kilts

Recently I went to the post office to ship a kilt. I had taped 2 medium size priority mail boxes together to make a long box. The goal was to pack the kilt without folding it in half, which can cause wrinkles.
The very kind postal clerk said there's a new priority mail box which would work perfectly. It's called a Board Game box and the size is 11.75 X 3 X 23.68.
And it's free. I ordered a bunch of them on the USPS website.

That's (almost) the perfect size box. I ordered some for our store as a trial. My only 2 issues with it so far:

The length of the box is effectively 23.5". Many kilts are 24" or 25" long, which means they'll get bunched up at the bottom a bit. On top of that, some companies (us) give away a free garment bag with 8 Yarders, which adds to the bulk and length a bit.

The cost... it's $14.95 flat rate pricing. It IS better than Fedex or UPS. However, the USPS 'medium' flat rate boxes (which the kilt would have to be folded in half for) are $10.50 for shipping. When you give away free shipping (orders over $200), every penny, or in this case 445 pennies, counts.

All in all a better option for the box though... hmm... maybe it can be turned inside out and used as a regular priority box. Hmmm...

I agree with Rocky about the length of the new boxes. It's just not long enough for virtually all the kilts I make. I ordered a bunch of custom made boxes a few years ago, and they are 27" long. That's just right to wrap a kilt in brown paper and still have a little room to spare. The boxes cost me only about $2 a box, and, given the cost of a kilt, I thought it was well worth it. I, too, don't like to fold a kilt in half when I ship it.
