Regarding ties, my dilemma is that for me to get the front part of the tie to the top of the kilt, where I prefer to wear it, the back part (narrow end) is below the front part. I recently remedied that on two ties by cutting about 3 inches off the narrow end, and having my local alteration shop sew the end back up. Seems to work well.
Interesting solution. Like CMcG, I just tuck the long narrow end inside my shirt placket.
