An excellent find, CMcG! Like you, I much prefer buckle brogues, but feel that the only way to properly wear ghillie brogues with formal wear is with a buckle as you propose.

I'm sorry that I can't help you with attaching the buckles, but look forward to finding out how for myself.

Good luck, I look forward to seeing how they turn out!

I was planning on trying this when i can find a pair of nuckles... Low priority financially at the moment...

My thought was to make an H with slightly thicker leather punch a hole on each of the legs of the H , drape the bar of the H over the buckle centrer, the legs under the buckle, and then just thread the laces as you would normally... Makes perfect sense in my head... Not sure about in words though...

I got my silver plated buckles on eBay for about $10, so not too much of a financial burden

Your 'H' pattern sounds interesting. Are the holes in the legs to thread the laces through?

Yep... If you size the leather based on the holes spacing, i figured i'd be able to effectively hide how they were mounted...depending on how bug the shoe are etc, it might even be with trying to mount the leather on the underside of the shoe eyelets... Blisters might be an issue if things are too tight... Depends on your socks etc maybe...

    Question R&D

I tried a few different ways of tying the buckles on. The following pictures show a way that seems fairly sturdy because the laces are first tied to, then woven through the cross bar of the buckles. Still need to glue the leather backing on to the buckles but I wanted to figure out how to attach them first.

    Thoughts?
