    Wear Your Kilt

Something that I noticed at the Irish festival in Denver over the weekend was the abundance of vendors selling every variety of modern or traditional kilt imaginable. There were a fair number of folks wearing them, too, of course. One would suppose that these mostly end up in closets between events. In this context it is a puzzle why we don't see more of at least casual kilts as daily street wear. I try to do my part keeping dust from gathering on mine. Just a thought, that's all.

I think a lot of folks are reluctant to wear them apart from festivals.

I wore mine just to walk the dog yesterday.

The only commentary I received was a gaggle of little girls (probably 10-12 years old) yelling "You go girl!" which almost prompted a response...

But then I realized that their lives will get hard enough, being so ignorant, that anything I could say or do would pale in comparison.

I should preface this by saying that I am not a casual, everyday kilt wearer; I wear my kilt in dressier situations and when there is a particular reason to wear a kilt.

I recently wore mine to church to celebrate the anniversary of the repeal of the Act of Proscription and was surprised by the number of men that told me about their kilts. I have never seen anyone else in my area kilted except at Highland games or in the pipe bands at parades.

I asked each of them why it was that I had never seen them wearing their kilts, and each of them, upon being asked the question, seemed to wonder the same thing.

Hopefully some (if not all) of them will come around!

Weather this week in Pennsylvania has been 90 degrees and above with high humidity so the "natural air conditioning" of kilts has come in handy. I have been wearing mine every night when I get home from work.

I have succeeded in getting some of the other kilt-owning fathers at the karate school my son attends to start wearing their kilts on a more regular basis since me and another father started wearing ours.

I also wore my USAK casual out last night to walk the dog with my wife and got three compliments (two from very attractive women) and a few good questions.

Still get some stares when I wear a kilt to Home Depot, though.

Yah, I get a few stares at H D, grocery store, etc. and mostly ignore it. My neighbors must be getting used to seeing me working in the yard or walking dogs. A friend at my pottery studio wears his U Ks daily. People around there probably just think we're eccentric artists. Could be right.

People in my part of town are getting used to seeing me in a kilt, too.
And now that I have two of them, I can ring the changes.

Yeah, I love wearing my UK, and often do around the house. But I feel weird when wearing it out in public.

That being said, I did wear it to Milwaukee Scottish Fest, The Renaissance Faire, and am going to be wearing it at Irish Fest. And that doesn't bother me. Probably because there are other people wearing them, and in the case of the Ren Faire, much stranger people to look at.

I wore mine for a recent birdhouse building project. I wore it to the hardware store and I wore it around my workshop. I only changed to trousers when it came to painting the birdhouses.

Sure, I love to "kilt up" for festivals and occasions, but no-reason-at-all is as good a reason as another.

I probably wear kilts more in cooler months, with a high temp around 99 with about 50-60% humidity today in Middle Georgia, even with "natural" air conditioning, it's just too dad blame hot for me to break out some wool, or even PV. Maybe it''s just that I feel the need to wear hose etc to feel comfortable kilted up. Although, come to think of it, if an occasion calls even if its 100 degrees, I will wear one, but I won't feel as comfortable dripping sweat etc.
