GUYS, I had to leave yesterday and cool off overnight before I came back to this topic. It is a minefield of temper trigger points. Just a hint.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Hold your horses chaps! Phil is not being totally accurate here and does give a slightly misleading impression.
Those of us in the UK who possess firearms legally -------- rifles, shotguns and on rare occasion pistols--------are not supervised whilst using or possessing a firearm as such. However we are authorised by the Police to use, possess or hold a firearm or firearms and yes the Police questions are searching, but any one of good character should have no problem satisfying the local Chief Constable that you are a "fit person" to buy, borrow or use a firearm. Is the system perfect? Sadly not. Without delving into detail, Shotgun Certificates(Document of Authorisation) do differ in requirements to a Firearms Certificate(D. of A.), but neither require "Police supervision", strict, or otherwise. It may surprise Phil that Inverness-shire has more Shotgun/Firearm Certificates than any other county in the UK. Commonplace well no, unusual certainly not.

I'd like to cite the last couple pages as to why this rule is here.
i'd also like to cite Tobus's eloquent contributions where he managed to politely state the case, but also managed to eloquently and politely divide the board into Us vs Them on at least 4 occasions.
I could see a relaxation of sorts. I dont see why you couldnt discuss the making of a kilt friendly holster or a discussion on dirks and sgians.
but the line has to be drawn somewhere. some of you eventually have to realize there are gun-friendly kilt sites, but this aint one of them.

Herr Doktor, some valid points raised.
Jock, thank you for clarifying.

Wait, there are? WHERE?
I am not leaving here, but I'd also like to participate in a place where some issues I actually have may actually be addressable without breaking rules. I'm a law-abiding guy and don't want to upset the mods -- I mod in a few fora elsewhere so I feel for the brotherhood of Beset-Upon Mods everywhere.

I think Chas answered the 'where' question in post #106, AJ.

That's where Brain went, with his Jacobite info post, and I registered over there, too.

Actually not. But this has certainly been a very revealing thread and Tony's observations rather insightful.
I stopped trusting people on here when they started posting questions about concealed carry and then wanted to organize a 'kilt night'. I have no 'irrational fear' of firearms, weapons, tools, etc, except when carried in urban environments.
I haven't needed to fire a shot to scare bears off, though we've run into them and my old dog wasn't stupid enough to antagonize bears, moose or other wild animals because he was trained not to do so. I have in the remoter parts of ___ fired a weapon before going to sleep at night camping rough, while leaving a lantern in a cairn of rocks to discourage cougars, a tip from a shepherd who ran sheep in the area for years.
But really, my only interest in this site a few years ago was to see what was considered good taste for traditional kilts. For the history of regiments, tartan, weapons there are far better forums, or better yet, I understand there are still books and libraries in the world. That said- when Jock posted a picture of an Enfield, or someone asks about something in an historical context, it doesn't seem to me to be something to get all heated up about.
But when you start talking about modern weapons and carrying weapons for real and how to hide your wee pistol in your garter its rather lurid, and i certainly don't want to listen to anything either side of the fence about the US second amendment here. Or for that matter the choices made by different countries in regard to guns.
Just random opinions and ...well you know the saying...

I did not really wish to entre into the debate on this topic. The Politically Correct factions have smelt the blood.
Since I have started this tread , I feel I must be obliged to include here my observations and suggestions.
The posting on the 17th-18th Century Dirk was censored and the author has now deleted the images. Yes, I can understand why he did this, standing in his place and being censored without notice or explanations I would have done so as well. It is insulting. From what I may deduce the tread has fallen victims to the large weapons censorship debate where the easily offended politticaly correct can anonymously call in the moderators to bend things to their own wills.
I think your comments here Herr Doktor do not tally with explanations given by the owner, several moderators and the page of the forum explaning the proceedure of reprting a post. If a post is reported the author is always notified and is not censored without notice or explanation.
Also the moderators are not there to bend to anyones will, and I find it insulting that you think they "sway in the wind" allowing members to bend them to their way of thinking. I am not a moderator, I have only seen moderators apply the rules as they are written. Perhaps a read of the relevent page in relation to "reporting a post" will will provide some education on how things proceed when a post is reported.
In relation to a seperate thread for expanded discussion of weapons, where a rule 11 would not apply, can someone explain to me why some members should be become "one of the elite"? Whilst the "peasants" who may have special interests in other areas have to abide by the rules on their special interest subject? I have made reference to this in one of my previous posts by no-one has cared to reference it in any of there answers

I seem to recall that I had a bit of a ticking off over that!
But actually, I was proving a point(again), that in the correct context it was, in my view anyway, a perfectly legitimate thing to do considering the rules as they stood at the time and nothing more was said.
Now in the next few days Steve and the mods are going to discuss this thread and its posts. Do we at least want a better worded Rule 11? Do you want the weapons rules widened, by at least a bit? You do? Well it might be best for those that do, to choose their words carefully. We have had a few slips of the tongue here that are not helping the cause. Just saying.
