Oh yeah, we Americans know nothing of anything Scottish or European for that matter. We only like to keep count of sports and holidays.....

It's a shame some people are so adamant that just because they are from Scotland they know more than anyone else about kilts.
I'm just glad that there are people like Matt out there who are so devoted to the history of the kilt that they can keep it alive through this adversity.

I was once confronted about my kilt wearing not that long ago...I was asked, "Do you even have a drop of Scottish blood in you?" I said, "Oh, yes. Besides the Irish in me, I have lots of Scottish blood - the Campbell's and the Stuart's." I then pointed out whilst the Kilt is the National dress of Scotland, it can be worn by anyone of any nationality. That was kind of end of conversation. Though, it may confuse people where I am able to switch between an American and an Irish accent quite freely...haven't tried learning the Scottish accent, yet.
By the way, this whole thread has been a very interesting read.
Cheers.

Arlen:
As a MacDonald, you'll appreciate this story: Reportedly, at a clan gathering many years ago, some native Scots were complaining about all of the Yank, Canuck, Kiwi, Aussie, etc. MacDonalds wearing kilts. Lord MacDonald got wind of this & supposedly said:
"The blood is strong. Do you really expect 2000 miles and 200 years to kill it?"
If it's not true, it should be.

Lord MacDonald showed a lot of wisdom with that answer. Not only did he appeal to the pride of the native born MacDonalds, but he also acknowledged the widespread appeal of the kilt.

Sounds like the phenomena of folks out in the American West copping an attitude about the "outsiders" who show up in Western Wear. You always hear or read these comments like, "No real cowboy would wear a hat like that." and suchlike. I suppose that they expect the tourists to show up in their suits and wear them while riding, fly-fishing, etc.
I would hope that Native Scots would look kindly on all this kilt wearing by the Diaspora.

Kilt myth
I met Lord Godfrey Macdonald once and he is very supportive of clan links regardless of where one is from. I imagine Godfrey and his wife Lady Clare would like to meet all clan visitors to the Isle of Skye. The Macdonald lands mostly went to the government when his father died and the Lord and Lady make their way in the world through tourism and visitors to their restaurant and purchasers of Lady Clares cook books.
