Are Sashes for Men or Not???

Another point is that the sash is a desendant of the sword baldric, which was used to carry a sword, generally from the 15th through 16th Century. So why would it be WRONG for a man to wear a sash if he so desires?

I'm not saying it would be fashionable, just NOT WRONG.

Besides, the majority of folks call kilts the "S-word" and say that they are for women. If we don't let that attitude sway us from wearing kilts, why the fuss about a sash?

No one has said that it is WRONG for a man to wear a sash, just that in Highland dress, the sash is traditionally associated with female dress.

Yes, that is a lady's sash the man is wearing in the photo from the sports kilt place. How strange that they would start making up things like that for men to wear. It's just wrong, I tell you. It's enough to drive a traditionalist like myself crazy!

As far as "Highland Dress" goes, I really don't recall brown leather Utilikilts being part of the package either.

If the kilt were tartan, I'd be less inclined to argue the point about not wearing a tartan sash. However, since there is not attempt at formal, or even casual Highland Dress, where is the objection?

Ron -please dont wear a sash, if you want a Plaid get on -a nice fringed one, normally grooms wear one over the left shoulder, In the unlikely event your a clan chief then wear it on the right.
I just looked at the pic and the guy looks like hes auditioning for a role as a stereotypical Scotsman in some kind of comedy film, with his pipers

I know some people have said theres noting "wrong" with wearing a tartan sash but it doesnt look right. leave it for the lassies!!! check out the "blue hawaii" it would definatly raise a smile!!!

This sounds like arguing for the sake of arguing. It also sounds like a debate that would take place at Tom's. The arguement isn't over the type of kilt, as if it is a kilt it does apply to some of the guidelines of highland wear. The arguement is whether or not tartan sahses are for men or women. Only one person has argued for the sahes being men's wear or acceptable.

Ron, sorry that your legitimate questions needs to spark such a silly debate. Yes sashes are used for men in military and fraternal wear. But will it look foolish to wear a tartan sash on a man, probably.

Sir Roberts quote "therse no right or wrong way to wear highland dress" Im afraid its not 100% accurate, Highland dress is a very important part of Scots/Irish/Welsh/ Celtic culture and as such deserves a bit of thought and reverence as some people might be offended by someone not paying proper attention to detail, In Scotland you would not see someone wearing a "sash" a fly plaid is sometimes worn by Grooms and pipers have one that wraps around and hangs like a fly plaid, please forget about sashes , a well fitting kilt matching hose and shoes nd a Jacobite shirt or argyll jacket is plenty, you start adding all sorts of brigadoonary and you risk being branded a bounder!!
