Are Sashes for Men or Not???
So was on the SportKilt website and checking their specials. There's a photo there that shows a guy wearing what they call a "Full Outfit" He's wearing a sash with his SportKilt.

I bought a sash, thinking they knew what they are talking about. But I've learned on this board that sashes are for women only....
Now I'm really confused. If sashes are for women only why is SportKilt advertising them for men...??
Puleeze enlighten my besotted brainpan 'cause I don't wanna be laughed out of the Highland Games...
I have a ladyfriend going with me to the Camp Verde Games this weekend...I can give her the sash to wear.
Thanks,
Ron

Isnt' the overall opinion of SportKilt not very high on this board??
And if so, may perhaps Sportkilt be mistaken??
Perhaps its "sashes for lasses, plaids for lads"....
and yes, that came out of my head, on my own...

sashes...
The tartan sash is traditionally an accessory for a woman, Ron.

Ron, what are the measurements on that sash? If it's wide enough maybe you can wear it as a plaid rather than a sash.

I beg to differ.
While on ordinary ocassions, sashes are more common on women, I've seen lots of photos of gentlemen wearing sashes. Both the diagonal and around the waist.
Looks RenFaireish
One of the oldes parts of the Scout Uniform, the Merit Badge Sash
Please note that His Imperial Majesty Napoleon III is wearing both a waist sash and a diagonal sash
This one comes from the Phoenix Masonry Museum.
And next time you are in a liquor store, note the Highlander on the Dewars White Label Scotch Whisky label. Not only is he wearing a plaid, and white cross-belt (diagonal right shoulder to left hip), but he is also wearing a yellow sash draped from left shoulder to right hip.
In addition to the above photos and paintings, there are many formal occassions when a gentleman wears a sash as a badge of office. I believe that sashes are customary among the diplomatic corps for white tie events.
Sashes on men might be out of the ordinary, but they are NOT INCORRECT, IMHO.
So if it suits your taste and style, go for it Ron!

All those sashes though, are not tartan. That may be the major difference.
I have worn an order of the arrow sash, and a merit badge sash, but I consider those a component of a uniform.
I could also wear a 'Mr. Universe' sash if I so desired, but I think the general definition of a sash and wearing one does not necessarily apply in this situation......

yeah, anyway.....I still say that the vast majority of sashes are meant for women. Stick to the plaid Ron.

Exactly -- and almost all of those sashes are part of a military uniform or regalia of a fraternal organisation like the masons or the boy scouts, or an order of chivalry. The Tartan sash is not a piece of uniform "kit" per se.

Ron,
I would suggest that you have your lady wear the sash. (It's much better that an t-shirts that says, "I'm with the old fart.")
My wife has a matching sash for a number of my kilts. She wears these, as a sash, when we "get dressed up" and as a scarf, she's French, when we are casual.

The tarten sash looks more like an attempt to impersonate a Great Kilt when a guy wears it and looks out of place unless the material has the bulk of a wool kilt and provides the "blouseiness" around the waist.
It reminds me of the moral from Jurasic Park, "Just because you could, doesn't mean you should".
I'd say wear it as a plaid or a womens accessorie.
