Three of my kilts have teflon coatings, just washed one as part of my normal laundry and had fabric conditioner in the wash before I read this warning!

Seems to be OK though, have hung it to dry naturally, none of these new-fanlged dryer thingies for me!

I have a wool brush for my wool kilts. I hang them up outside to freshen them up and then brush them a little. When they get dirty a little woolite in the tub does it. All others get washed when they start to get a little funky or appear soiled. O'Neille

    Wait a minute...
    You guys wash your kilts?!?!
    *Ducks and runs*

I do my best to keep stuff from getting on them.
If I had to wash one, I think I would hand wash it myself.
Failing that, cold/cold and gentle cycle. Then hang dry.
Wool... handwash with Woolite/spot clean, or dry cleaner (haven't done either yet though).

"though one of them has enough beer worked into the weave that I could probably suck on it and get a buzz"
HA! I'm NOT the only one!
That's my SWK Weathered Lamont... you CAN'T see the beer stains unless you look long, and hard... even I can't find them most of the time.

Hard too see through beer-stained eyes, eh?

When my kilt is soiled it is about time to wash. Cold water hang dry.

Talking with my kilt maker she recomends never dry cleaning my new wool one that is coming the chemicles do nasty things to the wool she says. instead she recomends hand washing and either hang dry or flat drying.

But if the kilt isn't to dirty she says brush it of and let the sun kill the rest of the funk.

Hmm.. interesting.. I havent washed my heavy wool kilt yet, but have been paranoid to do anything BUT dry clean it. It seems like a few people dont even bother washing them. Maybe Ill just let my kilt smell of, well, "me" :P

I wouldn't wash a woollen kilt I was talking about casual PV ones!

why not wash em in water? what do you think happened to the sheep when it rained? wool CAN get wet and still be ok! woolite for dark colors ( it helps the dye stay on the kilt better ) and COLD water followed by hanging out side to drip dry for a day or two and whilt its hanging run the pleats between your fingers to bring back the crisp knife edges and it'll look great!

I personally use about a half cap in about 5" of water and then put the kilt in and just lift it out let the water run out of it repeat about 6 or so times.
drain the woolite water out replace with fresh water dunk repeat about 6 or so time or till the water gets nasty ( and if you've never washed your kilt ....it will be!) if it does get nasty ...fresh water ..repeat till its clear water.

I NEVER wring or really aggitate the kilt as it will strech the wool out... just dunk , and lift..you'll be supprised how much gunk is in a kilt ( and how much comes out ) the colors will look bright and new! I've foud that dry leaning never really gets the colors looking good. they always look dull to me.
