I probably mentioned this encounter before but it's still one of my favorites.
I was walking down the street wearing my USA casual and this cool guy is walking toward me.
Cool Guy: Heeeeyyyy! Scottish, right?
Me: Me? No, I'm from Chicago.
Cool Guy: No...I mean the kilt.
Me: The kilt's from Philadelphia.
...left that guy standing there trying to figure out just what had happened.

By the way, the questions don't get much better if you actually are Scottish. Then they move onto strange clan histories or your hat doesn't match. Maple Leaf kilts are really confusing.
It's a good thing Scots don't have a stereotype of patient and polite or I'd have ruined that a long time ago.
Best reaction, from a woman, was after I said, loudly, "Tell your friend I would never ask HER that question!". I was standing at the checkout trying to pay for something.
