Forgive my ignorance, but, isn't an Argyll jacket the "sports coat" of kilt wear. What you wear with the jacket would depend on the occasion. If out shopping for the day and the weather is cool, couldn't it be worn over a knit collared ****, even a tee-shirt. If you are going out to dinner a nice business shirt of a color that compliments the kilt.

As a sports coat it can be dressed up of a semi-formal occasion or down for casual occasion. IMHO

BEEDEE has hit the nail on the head with the turtleneck. Especially the heavier ribbed ones. It really goes wonderfully with tweed and I would think a white or grey one would go with a black or charcoal Argyle very well. I picked up a black Braemar at the Pleasanton Games and have been pondering options. I might venture a short sleeved polo with a tweed kilt jacket, or maybe a navy blue Argyle (maybe). But I think in general you need a long sleeved shirt for an Argyle in black. There is always the very Panache-like option of wearing a long sleeve dress shirt with an open collar.

    Cheers

My personal preference is a white dress shirt with a spread collar with barrel cuffs. I would wear a long tie with this combination.

For formal wear with an Argyle, I go with a spread collar tux shirt and black studs with a black bow tie. IMHO the wing collar tux shirt is too formal to wear with a argyle although I have worn a wing collar with an argyle jacket and see many others wearing them.

I like turtle neck shirts with a kilt, they give the outfit a more casual look.

There are NICE collarless shirts. See a formal store and they can probably get one that will fit. There is a GREAT one here in Clinton called Adair's Mens Shop, but most of you probably won't want to drive THIS far.

    BUT, if you do . . .
I promise a decent kilted time here!

We also have a decent "Fish and Chips" place (a good seafood place at the main interstate exit, which is a MAJOR stop between Greenville or Spartanburg and Columbi or Charleston here in South Carolina.
Oh, and THAT exit also has 2 (TWO) Waffle House diners, 2 of the busiest in the WHOLE COUNTRY and the ONLY ones just across the interstate from one another. I enjoy eating at them too.

    shirts and Argyll jackets

I know that the black barathea type Argyll jacket, with silver buttons etc.,is worn as an evening jacket and to my eyes they look great.BUTstrictly speaking it is a formal day wear jacket to be worn with a collar and tie(not bow tie).

The tweed Argyll is a "jack of all trades" coat.weddings, even smart ones, funerals, drinks parties, business meetings, even a supper party, casual and slightly less casual evening drinks do etc..In other words you name it and you will get away with it as long as the event is not formal. In other words it equals a suit."Dress up with your new(20 years old) tweed Argyll, dress down with with your old(50years old) one", was the guide.Assuming you had two to choose from!

There is really no "sports jacket" in Scottish kilt terms,so shirt and pullover does for casual day wear.

There is one other Argyll coat that is not seen much these days and that is the black barathea coat but with black,or sometimes horn, buttons. It is great for weddings where you do not want to outshine the bride and has the advantage of wearing a normal day sporran and thus avoiding those awful semi-dress sporrans.

It's more like the equivalent of a business suit jacket. The crail is closer to a sport coat.

I dont think it matters if you are talking about Argyll,Crail or the Balmoral jacket,we( I )think of them as a variation of the same theme. As I said the TWEED version of "the Argyll"is regarded as a jack of all trades.Dont forget that they are loosely based on a military cut so they are tailored to a snug fit.Not much good for shooting Grouse or deer stalking or any other casual but vigorous pastime. That is why we then resort to shirts and pullovers. The members of the non kilt wearing world would, perhaps, resort to a looser fitting sports coat.

Best source of grandfather collar shirts, many in styles that go very well with kilts, are western wear stores, particularly stores like Wild West Mercantile that cater to reenactors. The price is right, they're often available in linen. I think the website is www.wildwestmercantile.com if you don't have a store near you. If I'm wrong on the web addy google up some. Think there's a Texas Jack's too...and many others. Or check the ads in True West Magazine.

The Argyll is equivalent to a business suit, looks best with a waistcoat, collared shirt & tie, and IMO would look goofy as hell with anything but.

I agree, the waistcoat sets off the Argyll a treat and as you say, with a collar and tie.
