I remember I had a comic book called "The Defenders" that Dr. Strange, Hulk, and some others were members of. I think it was trying to capitalize on the "Avengers" market w/ some unused heroes. Not sure if Iron Man was in it or not.

I didn't read Marvel that much, but wasn't Iron Man one of the original Avengers? And Iron Man (Rhody) was one of the first West Coast Avengers.
Well, this kilted geek ... er, sci-fi fan will be seeing that next May.

The Defenders were the B-team Avengers...they ended up with the super-folk who were just not quite Avenger material...and let's face it, the whole "Avenger" thing was a Justice League ripoff.
When you've got loose cannons like the Hulk and Namor...let's face it: this lot probably couldn't agree on a place for lunch let alone a mister plan to defeat a Skrull invasion.

There used to be a wonderful, but silly Marvel Series called "What if". I remember the premise of one issue was "What if everyone who had ever been an Avenger had remained an Avenger?" On the first page was the call "Avengers Assemble!" the next two completely pages showed a spread of a super hero army rushing forward to answer the call...

I had that poster on my wall, in my late teenage years.

The other one I remember was "What if Aunt May was the Herald of Galactus?"

I remember the issue of "What If?" where Galactus lost a fight, and the winner dumped him on Earth, without his memory, in the form of a human that looked just like Elvis Presley. Galactus went on to become a talented
country-western singer with a fondness for cheeseburgers ...

speaking of "what-ifs". About 10 yrs ago, Marvel brought DC to the good class of comics and they teamed up to do Amalgam(sp?). Where they combined heros from each universe to make them 1.
Ex. DarkClaw was Wolvie as a Batman type hero. He had the attitude of Wolvie but the "I'm rich" gadgets of Batman.
This was also part of a super battle where Marvel heros were forced to battle DC heros on an Alternate Earth...I remember Wolvie & Gambit stealing the batmobile. Capt. America and Batman ended up figuring things out. Like I said, its been 10 yrs. I remember that Wolvie kicked Lobo. I think Storm beat Wonder Woman. Aquaman beat Sub-Mariner. Shazam and Thor was a good fight, but I can't remember who won.
It was cool. I remember my Local Comic shop had a contest. I combined Dr. Octopus w/ Aquaman to form Octoman.
