I own two ties. One is red. I bought it for a job interview some years back. The other is a green stripe. I bought it when they called me back for a second interview.
I'm not exactly sure where they are these days...

Due to my other line of work, I have a number of ties.
Then not kilted, I OFTEN wear a tartan tie.
When kilted, I am just "building up" enough jackets for a tie and jacket combo. So, I haven't worn ties much, as of yet.
BUT, my thoughts:
Generally, a tie in a tone that matches one in the kilt or black would be best.
This is the ONLY time I have worn a tartan tie with a kilt:
As it was a "Kirking of the Tartans" I tried the combo. I've seen similar in numerous jacket ads on sites. It doesn't look THAT bad. Actually, I had a black one in the car! In the future, I would ONLY wear one that matched the kilt.
Generally, I like simple and clean lines to my clothing. So, simple and solid ties are favorable, but VERY hard to find right now, as all the stores around me carry patterned ties of some sort.

What is this "tie" thing you mention?

Regimental stripes are acceptable with tartan kilts. I, also, wear solid-coloured ties with my clan crests, or pictures of a piper.

I wear ties often with kilt. Solid, contrasting or accenting colors or tartan.
I only have two tartan ties and I only wear them to match that kilt - I NEVER mix tartans. I tend to wear the tartan ties more often when I am also wearing a vest or waist coat.
With formal evening wear, I only wear a black bow tie.
I NEVER wear a striped or pattern tie with kilt. This could change if I had a tie with some Scottish motif or some funny Scottish inspired design. If I had a tie with a cartoon of a wild haggis on it, I might wear it - I don't have one, so I don't wear one.
To my eye, acceptable or not, stripes don't go with tartan!
I like to match my ties to my kilt and also to the hose.
I have several ties, from my saxon days, that now only act as tie-downs for heavy loads on the pick-em-up truck!

My tie choices are a black bow tie for formal. With the Modern Campbell of Cawdor kilt, I normally wear a red wool tie to match the red stripe, with the Ancient Lamont Kilt I wear a matching tartan tie, simply because I can't find a tie that really matches up with the colors in the kilt.
If anyone has any suggestions for the Ancient Lamont Kilt, I would be happy to hear them. Sorry, black long ties are out.

I wouldn't tell that to an ex-squaddie wearing his regimental tie with his kilt!
As Bob Martin, in All about your kilt says, it's all in the "toning" of patterns.

Jim, you can order from us a solid kilt tie in either ancient green or ancient blue to go great with that tartan.

You may well be right, as most true Regimental ties that I have seen, have been small stripes and rather tasteful colors. The only Regimentla tie that I can say that I own, would be my USMC tartan tie, and it goes well with my USMC tartan!
- and the truth be told, I wear the kilt to suit me, not what someone has written in a book!
Bob Who?
