Thanks guys.
We're thinking of the MacTavish clan tartan (229) but the tie I have it the red is maybe a bit too bright so I wanted to see how the different dye schemes would make it look.
I think the house of tartan tartan finder was the one but they seem to have changed the search engine, I can't see how to change the dyes anymore.
Thanks for all your help.

The best tartan search engine in terms of having the most complete record of tartans, and accessing information about those tartans, is the Tartan Ferret at the Scottish Tartans Authority site. This will allow you to search the complete International Tartan Index.
http://www.tartansauthority.com/Web/...rchintroc2.asp
However, if the purpose of your search is to view the different tartans in their various color schemes, as they are available from different mills, you will want something different. In this case, I reccomend the search on tartanweb.org. This will show you actual photographs of tartan samples from most major Scottish tartan suppliers, and let you know what is available in terms of fabric weight and color scheme.

Lastly, if you know in advance which merchant you plan on buying from, a lot of individual merchant sites will have tartan searches showing what is available from them, and you should use those, as not every tartan merchant will be able to order cloth from every woolen mill.
(For example, the tartanweb.org search has Batleys, House of Edgar, Lochcarron, Martin Mills, and Strathmore. If you were shopping at the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop, I'd reccomend you look at our own availability list, http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/material.html, where you'd notice that we don't order cloth from Batleys or Martin Mills, but we do order from the other three listed, as well as Ingles Buchan; plus we have the option of custom weaving tartans that are not generally available.)
Aye,
Matt

And I think that the KiltStore tartan finder is the bee's knees. So many of the others have computerized tartans, and the colors never look like what they look like in the fabric. And if they don't have a thumbnail of what you want, I'd be flabbergasted!
Here's the direct link:

And I agree with Matt that the tartanweb.org site is great. Again, it's real tartan, and not a computerized rendition.

Isn't that interesting. Both of these were mentioned earlier in this thread. The only difference in them seems to be the option to change color schemes (modern, ancient, etc.) on the top link. I assume that is the one were looking for.

The thing that I _don't_ like about this site is that the setts are computerized, rather than tartan scans. I find it can be difficult to know what a tartan will actually look like "in the flesh" from computerized setts. The other thing about this site is that there are lots of historical variations that just aren't available. Lots of good information historically-speaking, but a lot of it isn't useful/practical for someone trying to decide on the tartan for a kilt.

Yeah, that I understand. However, maybe I was tired but I thought I found so many contradictory pictures for the different colourings ..... I forgot how much of a nightmare this was the last time!
I don't suppose anybody has any pictures of MacTavish (228) Modern or Ancient to hand??? At least this time I'm in Scotland and can get my kiltmaker on the case.
Thanks all.
