You are absolutely right. There was no budget set for accessories. That $150 is for the kilt only.

And here I was thinking that it was going to be one of those "either the kilt goes or I go" threads. That's pretty cool of her. Well, if she keeps her word. As long as you married an honest woman, you've got it made. (I'd have an awful hard time. My wife likes to change the rules too much. It's a good thing she likes my kilts.)

You can get a SWK Standard, flashes, sporran, belt/buckel, pin, and hose from SWK for less than $150.
I did.

Dispense with the SWK Standard. get the Heavyweight. It's getting nippley in our part of the globe. You'll be more comfortable in wool, much more so than Levi's. As for which SWK HW think Black Shadow tartan. Firstly the shadow effect is quite remarkable. Black goes with everything and hey it's cool looking for all those places your wife will take you that week. Top it off with black hose, Nightstalker sporran and belt(s). I feel that this would be your best bet without breaking the bank or worrying about having to "properly" accessorize. Kilts are addictive and expensive, so is finding that look.

But...since it's the first kilt...and the missus will be seen with him...it behooves her to allow for the accessories (belt, sporran, strap, hose) so he is her perfect accessory for the holidays. And beyond.

I am going to suggest a different approach.
Why not start with a Utilikilt. You will be wearing it for a whole week and you may want to wash it. An original can be had for less than $150 and can go with anything you wear with pants.
When you win your challenge go for a full tank, and you will have a kilt for working and casual to boot. You can then pick the tartan you relate to or even just like with no restrictions.
I started with a Utilikilt and got used to wearing one and let those around me get used to me wearing it and now I have 8 tanks and 8 Utilikilts to rotate and wear as I like.

Meh. Wool is tough and doesn't need to be washed as frequently as say cotton. In addition, wearing a long shirt tucked in or (gasp!!) something underneath the kilt for that week would also help keep the kilt cleaner. Judging from the 350 price of the original kilt he was looking at I'm assuming he would like a more traditional looking kilt. And soon enough he'll have 2+!!!
