Could also do the retirement uniform, but replace the polka-dot socks with a pair of off-white or oatmeal kilt hose with flashes that go along with your kilt... Kinda like what I'm wearing in my avatar... Done that many times. Surprisingly, the off-white hose looks better to my eyes when combined with white athletic shoes. Too drastic a contrast when combined with black shoes or even dark brown shoes.

Don't forget about a pair of wingtips. They were so ubiquitous once upon a time that most people can easily get a pair from a father/brother/closet and they work well with a kilt.
