Glad to hear one Xmarker offer to bail out another! (even if just some type of direct family connection or something!)
If you can't get both, let me know and I will loan you my "formal" rabbit fur sporran for the big night.

Rob Roy, though not appropriate will do. Though there are "kilt police" who might object, the polite ones will say nothing. The formal sporran, if you purchase it is not appropriate for day wear. Ditto on the kilt police.
If you know "the rules" and explain that either one is your first purchase and youknow the rules, I have yet to meet anyone who strenuously objects.
Yes, I am a kilt police, but I also understand that two rules of etiquitte apply:
1) You know the rules and would apply them if you could, or
2) You do not know the rules and they need to be explained in a polite, informative manner.
In either case, no gentleman or lady should give you a hassle, beyond making sure you know the rules.

This "too formal for casual wear or too casual for formal wear" question is a conundrum I've been imagineering on for some time. That's all I'm going to say now.

I've seen kilted men show up at outdoor Highland games during a Texas summer wearing their PC, plaid, and horsehair sporran. It's out of place and unnecessary.

Our own Matt Newsome (kilt maker, kilt historian, currator of thge Scottish Tartans Museum, and all round nice fellow) put up some advice advice on his Blog about sporrans:
http://blog.albanach.org/2006/07/black-v-brown.html
He has a line of hand made sporrans from Brit Fergusson, one of which is a black leather sporran with braided tassles (like the Rob Roy you pictured), but with an all leather cantle. I believe he said it would work for both formal and casual.
It might be worth taking a look or sending him a PM
Cheers

Well said Graywolf, I sure hope that I run into someone with your good attitude when I get caught with my first mistake in public. I'm sure you've all been there before me, and a guiding hand is much appriciated.
As for the evening sporran, is the friend who is loaning you the jacket also willing to loan you their evening sporran for the night? It would seem wise to me to invest in the one that you will get the most use out of, and borrow (or buy cheap) the other, knowing that you can always upgrade to a better model at a later date.
